Home
CCTV can protect your home from unwanted visitors and burglars, but its effectiveness is dependent on where you place the cameras.
Here is a list of the main places that your home security camera should be watching over.
Where to place your home CCTV cameras
Front door
The primary point of entry for a burglar is through the front door, so this is the most critical location for a security camera.
Back and side doors
Any doors into your property are a potential access point for an intruder so also need watching over. These include Patio and French doors.
As a bare minimum, you should have a security camera over your front door and back door.
Off-street windows
Windows which don't face onto the street are appealing to intruders as they're less likely to be seen breaking in. So, these too are a security risk which needs safeguarding.
Garage and driveway
A camera facing your garage and driveway will keep watch over any suspicious activity. If the garage is attached to your home, you'll protect another access route inside. If you've got a gate at the end of your driveway, a camera there will spot anyone attempting to get in.
When it comes to mounting your cameras, we recommend placing them at the second-floor level to prevent anyone from damaging the equipment.
Legal considerations
You're legally entitled to install CCTV cameras at your home to protect your property. However, there are data protection rules that you should be aware of when choosing where to site your cameras.
If your system only captures images within the boundary of your private domestic property (including your garden), then the data protection laws will not apply to you.
However, if your system records images of people outside the boundary of your private domestic property (e.g. in neighbours' homes or gardens, shared spaces, or on a public footpath or a street) then the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA18) will apply to you. You must ensure your use of CCTV complies with these laws.
You can still capture images, but you need to show you're doing it in compliantly and are upholding the rights of the people whose images you are capturing. You must have a clear and justifiable reason for doing so.
